Third edition of Nitte International Film Festival
The third edition of Nitte International Film Festival (NIFF 2019) was held at Bharat Cinemas, Bharat Mall, Mangaluru between the 8th and 11th April. NIFF 2019 saw 70 films being screened and had 40 film makers participating.
The festival was inaugurated by P Sheshadri, award winning Kannada film maker who has directed eight National Award winning films and presided over by Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University). The festival, which opened with the Kannada film "Mookajjiya Kanasugalu", showcased critically acclaimed cinema from across India and the world to the public in Mangaluru, while providing a platform for film-makers and film-viewers to have a conversation.
As is the practice every year, this year too all film-screenings and discussions at the festival were free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis. Screenings were followed by an interactive session with the film makers, which saw enthusiastic participation by the public of Mangaluru.
In addition to the screenings, the festival also saw national award winning film critic Manu Chakravarthy in conversation with P Sheshadri, on ‘Film as Text: Understanding the Writings of Shivaram Karanth through Cinema’. A panel discussion on film criticism with noted film critics Baradwaj Rangan, Sowmya Rajendran and Roshan Nair was moderated by film maker Aijaz Khan.
Recognising the lacuna in Mangaluru’s arts and culture landscape for a major film festival, NIFF was launched in 2017 as a student-run festival organized by Nitte Institute of Communication.
Over the years, there has been a steady increase in the number of people visiting and actively participating in the film festival, with many shows running to packed houses this year.
Second edition of NICO's Chocolate Street
Students of Nitte Institute of Communication organised a two-day chocolate festival, NICO's Chocolate Street on 30th and 31st March at Forum Fiza Mall in Mangaluru. This event was organised by the BA (final year) students as part of their curriculum, the subject being Event Management.
The festival provided a platform to home based chocolatiers to display and sell their home made chocolate based goodies. The two day event saw 23 home based chocolatiers displaying and selling their home made goodies.
The festival was inaugurated by Chef Vinu, of Taj Manjarun. Dr Anirban Chakraborthy, Deputy Director, NUCSER, presided over the event.
The highlight of the event was a live demonstration of chocolate making by Chef Manish of The Lalit, Bekal. The festival saw enthusiastic participation by the general public.
Beacons, the annual two day media fest was held on the 17th and 18th of October. The event was inaugurated by noted filmmaker, Abhaya Simha, with Dr Praveen Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director (Research), Nitte (Deemed to be University) presiding.
